GGT5 is a specialized enzyme that hydrolyzes the γ-glutamyl bond of glutathione and glutathione conjugates (e.g., leukotriene C4), but cannot cleave simple γ-glutamyl amino acids like γ-glutamyl leucine. Beyond hydrolysis, it mediates transpeptidation reactions to generate novel γ-glutamyl compounds. Importantly, GGT5 regulates immune responses by inactivating geranylgeranyl glutathione through γ-glutamyl group removal, highlighting its role in glutathione metabolism and immune modulation. |
